Volunteer Locations & Programs

Jaffna, Northeast Sri Lanka

We are situated near Jaffna in the northeast of the island. Volunteers are welcome to help students master the English Language. No experience necessary, just your time and a loving heart.

Class Schedule

Monday to Friday: 2:30 PM - 6:30 PM
Saturday mornings for library use
No morning classes on Sundays

Student Levels

Students at different levels - speaking with repetition, reading, playing games and singing is a great advantage for learning

Resources

Reference textbooks and educational games available to help with teaching

Accommodation

Basic ensuite double bedrooms with towels, sheets, and pillows. Washing machine available for volunteers

Meals & Kitchen

Nominal fee of AUD$30/day covers daily costs. Common kitchen available for special dietary needs

Transportation

Train or air-conditioned coaches from Colombo to Kilinochchi (AUD $15)
Local bus to Visuvamadu (3-wheeler AUD $2) to ELC
A manual vehicle is available for volunteers' with a valid licence.

Volunteer Requirements

We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds. Here's what you need to know before applying.

Commitment & Passion

A genuine desire to help and make a difference in children's lives. Minimum commitment of 2 weeks for on-site volunteers.

Language Skills

Fluent English speaking ability. Knowledge of Tamil or Sinhala is helpful but not required.

Background Check

All volunteers working with children must provide a clean background check from their home country.

Availability

Flexible schedule to work with our program hours. Remote volunteers can work according to their timezone.

Do I need teaching experience to volunteer?

No teaching experience is necessary! We welcome volunteers with just a loving heart and willingness to help. Our focus is on conversational English, games, and interactive learning where your enthusiasm matters most.

What are the accommodation costs?

We charge a nominal fee of AUD$30 per day to cover daily costs including basic accommodation and meals. This includes ensuite double bedrooms with towels, sheets, pillows, and access to washing machine facilities.

How do I get to the volunteer location?

Transport is available by booking on the train or air-conditioned coaches from Colombo to Kilinochchi (cost AUD $15). Then take the local bus to Visuvamadu, and a 3-wheeler from town which carries 3 passengers to the English Language Centre (ELC) costs AUD $2.

Can I volunteer remotely?

Yes! We offer various remote volunteering opportunities including online tutoring, administrative support, marketing, web development, and fundraising activities that can be done from anywhere in the world.

What is the minimum time commitment?

For on-site volunteers, we ask for a minimum commitment of 2 weeks to ensure continuity for our students. Remote volunteers can contribute with as little as 2-3 hours per week on an ongoing basis.
